Every year on December 10, we observe Human Rights Day in recognition of the day in 1948 when the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year the theme is dignity, freedom and justice for all. It is a double celebration as we also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Human Rights Code.

As we celebrate 75 years, we also look to the future: our children. In February 2022, the OHRC launched the Right to Read inquiry report, which focuses on children’s fundamental right to learn to read. This report will literally save lives and has already resulted in increased investments in evidence-based reading intervention programs and professional assessments, and a commitment from the Ministry of Education to revise the English and French public school curricula by September 2023.

As a continued effort to empower and inspire our future human rights champions and younger generation, we wanted to end this year with a short video on Human Rights Day, featuring children and youth engaging with us about their rights, responsibilities and freedoms.

The OHRC continues to work to reduce inequalities by advancing a human rights-based approach, to build a society that values the dignity and worth of every person. We work to empower the public with resources and knowledge to take part and contribute fully to the well-being of their community and province.
