Racial profiling accounts to be aired on national radio

Toronto - The Ontario Human Rights Commission today announced that some accounts from the Commission's recent inquiry on racial profiling have been adapted for the national radio program, Sounds Like Canada and will be aired from December 1st to December 12th, 2003.

"It is crucial to raise awareness and educate people about the damaging impact racial profiling can have on individuals, families and communities. Many of the experiences related to us over the course of the inquiry were very compelling. I am pleased that we can share some of these with a national audience," remarked Chief Commissioner Keith Norton.

Commission staff reviewed accounts shared with the CBC to ensure that participants' confidentiality remains secure. Any identifying information conveyed to the Commission about the profiling incident has been removed.

The release of the Commission's report on racial profiling is scheduled for December 9th, 2003. The Report will detail personal experiences with profiling, demonstrate the broad impact of profiling, and advance recommendations to eliminate the practice of racial profiling.

Sounds Like Canada airs on CBC Radio One at 10 am Monday to Friday.
